IMA Statement of Solidarity with the Workers of the Philippines
The International Migrants Alliance stands in solidarity with the workers of the Philippines in condemning the US-backed Marcos Jr. regime witch-hunt against filipino unionists such as Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) Chairperson Jerome Adonis and Kilusan ng Manggagawang Kababaihan (KMK) Spokesperson Jacq Ruiz.
Adonis and Ruiz have long been steadfast allies to the global migrant movement. Having served as a resource speaker for numerous IMA events and activities, they bridged the struggles of local workers with those of us forced to sell our labor in a foreign land.
These baseless, trumped-up warrants against them are an outrage the global migrant movement should not ignore.
Deploying PNP personnel to hunt down these progressive leaders is a blatant retaliation for the historic May Day mobilizations in the Philippines. These draconian attacks are what Marcos Jr. and Sr. are known for, criminalizing peaceful assembly.
As usual, instead of addressing the root cause of forced migration, which includes the lack of a living wage, and rampant contractualization, while acting as a lapdog to foreign monopoly capitalists and US geopolitical interventions like the Pax Silica project.
An attack on the local workers is an attack on all migrant workers. The IMA stands in solidarity with all kinds of workers, be it local or migrant. We must expose these relentless human rights violations, demand the immediate withdrawal of these fabricated and baseless charges, and hold the puppet Marcos Jr. regime accountable.
